The mode of action of S. boulardii has been extensively investigated.

S. boulardii has a luminal action[1]:

  • anti-toxin effect (demonstrated against vibrio cholera, Clostridium difficile toxin A and B, Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide [LPS])
  • antimicrobial effect
  • modulation of the intestinal flora
  • metabolic activity (increasing short chain fatty acids)

S. boulardii has a trophic action:

  • enzymatic activity (increasing the dissaccharidases, polyamines, and aminopeptidases)
  • enhancement of immune defense
